The Skill Challenge, 3-Point Contest, and Dunk Contest kick off on Saturday Night All-Stars
After a few days of rest and recovery from an extended period of the 2021-22 season, the NBA is back in action with its All-Star Weekend. The event came out on Friday with the Rising Stars, though things really do bounce back at All-Star Saturday Night. Always one of the most exciting nights on the league calendar, the All-Star Pre-Indicator will once again see three star-studded events: the Skill Challenge, the 3-Point Contest, and the Dunk Contest.
Here's everything you need to know about the big night:
Skills Challenge
When: Saturday 19 February
Time: 8 PM ET (Event 1) | TV: TNT
Participants: Team Antetokounmpo (Giannis Antetokounmpo, Thanassis Antikounmo, Alex Antetokounmpo), Team Caves (Garrett Allen, Darius Garland, Evan Mobley), Team Rocks (Scotty Barnes, Cady Cunningham, Josh Gedi)
The Skills Challenge, which debuted in 2003, is the opening show for tonight.
While the exact look has changed quite a bit over the years, the general idea has remained the same.
Players will make their way through an obstacle course that challenges their abilities in all aspects of the game: dribbling, passing and shooting.
This year, the event will feature three teams vying for the Skills Challenge crown.
3 point competition
When: Saturday 19 February
Time: 8 p.m. ET (2nd event) | TV: TNT
Participants: Fred Vanfleet (Raptors), Desmond Bunny (Grizzlies), Luke Kennard (Clippers), Zach Lavigne (Bulls), C.J. McCollum (Pelicans), Patti Mills (Nets), Karl-Anthony Towns (Timberwolves), Trae Young (Hooks)
After the skill challenge, we will move on to the 3-point competition. The format has changed in recent years with the addition of the MTN DEW, which are two extra picks from outside the 3-point line that count at 3 points each.
Otherwise, it's the same shape as always: five racks installed around the playing field with five balls each, one of which is marked by "money balls" worth 2 points. You have 60 seconds to shoot and the top three points from the first round move into the tournament round, where the winner is crowned.
dunk contest
When: Saturday 19 February
Time: 8 p.m. ET (event three) | TV: TNT
Participants: Obi Tobin (Knicks), Galen Greene (Rockets), Cole Anthony (Magic), Juan Toscano Anderson (Warriors)
Closing out tonight is the main event, the Dunk Competition, which has produced some of the most iconic moments in NBA history.
This one is as simple as it gets.
You try to do as much mystery as possible, and the five judges score your effort on a scale of 1 to 10, giving you a maximum of 50 points.
Each contestant receives two points in the first round, and the two highest combined scores move to the championship round, where they receive an additional two points to determine the winner.
This year's competition features an interesting mix of young players, including second seed, Jalen Green.
They've all thrown incredible runs into the game - Toscano Anderson was so immersed in JaVale McGee earlier this season that the Phoenix Suns center signed the slam label - but this event will test their athletic abilities and creativity in a different way.
