Kiev, Ukraine (CNN) - The military operations announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday are entering their fourth day, Sunday, and here we review the highlights of what happened last night until 3:30 a.m. local time in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev.
Two big explosions near Kiev, igniting oil tanks: Two large explosions lit up the night sky in the southwest of Kiev early Sunday morning, apparently around the Vasylkiv district, about 30 kilometers south of Kiev, a town with a large military airport and tanks Multiple fuels. Soon after, CNN verified a video of a raging fire in the oil storage area of Vasilkiev Air Force Base, southwest of the air base's main runway.
Fierce resistance: Russia is facing "tougher-than-expected" resistance from the Ukrainian military as well as unexpected difficulties in supplying its forces, two senior US officials with direct knowledge told CNN. A senior defense official said that Russia had suffered heavy losses in personnel, armor and aircraft more than expected, and had not yet achieved air superiority over Ukraine.
Presidential appeal: The Ukrainian president appealed to Ukrainians to resist the invasion, and called on those living abroad to return and defend the country. He also welcomed the volunteers from abroad, saying, "We will give you weapons."
Russian banks kicked out of SWIFT: The White House, the European Commission, France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and Canada said they support the expulsion of some Russian banks from SWIFT, the highly-secure network that connects thousands of financial institutions around the world.
Social media giants intervene: Russian state media will no longer be allowed to display ads or otherwise monetize their content on any platform owned by Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, the company said Friday night. Similarly, YouTube banned the Russian state media website RT from Ukraine and suspended its ability to monetize its content on the platform globally.
