After failing to pass a resolution due to Russia's veto as a permanent member, the United Nations Security Council will hold a meeting on Sunday at 20:00 GMT to adopt a draft resolution calling for "inviting the United Nations General Assembly to hold a special session" tomorrow, Monday, devoted to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. , according to diplomatic sources.
This mechanism provided for by the United Nations systems is rarely used, noting that it does not include the possibility of one of the five permanent members of the Security Council resorting to the veto.
What is its purpose?!
The purpose of this "extraordinary session of the General Assembly" is to "get the 193 member states of the United Nations to take a stand" on the conflict, on "violation of the UN Charter" and of course condemnation of the war, as one diplomat explained to AFP on condition of anonymity.
This will be the fourth meeting of the Council since last Monday on the Russian-Ukrainian conflict
In the event that the proposed draft resolution is approved, the same UN rule states that the "extraordinary session" of the General Assembly must be held within 24 hours of its adoption.
It is noteworthy that diplomats following this crisis expected that the text would obtain a majority of more than one hundred members of the United Nations.
This international movement comes as the clashes between the Russians and the Ukrainians continue on the ground for the fourth consecutive day.
