PITTSBURGH - Former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores just got a new home.
The Pittsburgh Steelers announced the hiring of Flores, who is suing the NFL and three teams, as their assistant defensive line and quarterback coach Saturday.
"I am excited to have Brian Flores join our coaching staff given his history of developing and educating defensive players during his time in the NFL," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said in a press release.
"Brian's resume speaks for itself, and I look forward to adding his experience to help our team".
Flores' hiring significantly boosts a defensive unit that recently saw Terrell Austin promoted to defensive coordinator following the retirement of Keith Butler, who also coached the team's outside players.
Flores has spent the past three seasons as a Miami coach, amassing a record 24-25 before being sacked last month.
Prior to that, he was the defensive play player for the New England Patriots, including Super Bowl LIII.
Flores, 40, sued the NFL, the Giants, the Dolphins and the Broncos this month, alleging discrimination in the interview process with New York and Denver and in his expulsion from Miami.
In the lawsuit, Flores alleged, among other things, that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross offered him $100,000 for each loss in 2019 in an effort to enter the top pick.
Flores also claimed that the Giants only interviewed him for their vacant coach position in January to comply with Rooney's rule, and said a similar scenario occurred in 2019 during an interview process with the Broncos.
The NFL has hired a law firm that includes former US Attorney Loretta Lynch to defend against Flores' allegations.
Despite the Steelers' appointment to Flores, his attorney, Douglas H.
Wigdor, issued a statement Saturday indicating that the lawsuit against the league will continue.
“While coach Flores is now focused on his new position, he will continue his segregationist class activism so that real change can be made in the NFL,” Wigdor said.
