The amount of losses incurred by businesses in Kazakhstan, as a result of the riots, exceeded 88.1 billion tenge (more than 200.4 million dollars), according to the National Chamber of Businessmen of Kazakhstan.
"The total damage to businesses, according to rough estimates, amounted to more than 88.1 billion tenge," the chamber said, in a statement carried by the Russian "TASS" news agency, today, Saturday.
In the city of Almaty, the number reached 86.8 billion tenge ($197.4 million). The statement indicated that the number of business entities affected reached 920 in 10 regions of Kazakhstan, of which 856 were in the city of Almaty alone.
Protests erupted in Kazakhstan on January 2, and later escalated into riots over high fuel prices.
On January 5, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev imposed a state of emergency throughout the country and agreed to the resignation of the government, provided that its members continue to perform their duties until a new government is formed.
