The governor of the US state of Texas announced that all the hostages were released unharmed, after a gunman held them for hours in a synagogue in Colleville, while police reported the death of their captor.
"All hostages are alive and well," Greg Abbott wrote on Twitter at 9:30 p.m. Saturday (0330 GMT Sunday).
For his part, the police chief announced that the hostage-taker had died.
According to press reports, a powerful explosion and gunshots were heard in the synagogue prior to Abbott's announcement.
Several hours ago, the police said that one of the hostages had been released, adding that "the man is not injured and does not need medical care and will be reunited with his family soon."
Earlier reports said the gunman held four people, including a rabbi, at the Colleville Synagogue.
After threatening to detonate bombs, he demands the release of a woman convicted of assault and attempted murder of a US soldier in Afghanistan, who is languishing in a US prison after being sentenced to 86 years in prison.
According to the American media, there is talk of the gunman's sister, Afia Siddiqui, who is imprisoned at an air base near Fort Worth, Texas.
