The House Special Committee, investigating Wednesday's January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol, asked parliamentary minority leader Kevin McCarthy (R-California) to voluntarily provide information on his communications with President Donald Trump and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows.

McCarthy said he would not cooperate with the commission, saying his "sole purpose was to try to discredit his political opponents."
McCarthy criticized the commission for asking me to "ask about public statements shared around the world and private conversations that are not related to the violence that took place on Capitol Hill. I did not add." The letter came the same day the commission interviewed former White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, a source familiar with her Washington Post testimony.
