Dutch police disperse a banned demonstration against the government's policies to confront Corona

Corona

Police in Amsterdam broke up an illegal demonstration against the Dutch government's policies to tackle the Corona virus.

About 10,000 people gathered in the afternoon in front of the Rijksmuseum in the capital, despite the ban on large gatherings, Dutch news agency ANP reported.

Clashes erupted in front of the National Museum between protesters and riot police, with four policemen injured when some protesters tried to break through a police barrier.

Police said that thirty participants were arrested. They were charged with public disorder, physical abuse, or unauthorized possession of weapons, among other charges.

Video footage showed police using batons against a group of women and men. Several hundred riot police were deployed before the protest.

The authorities reported that the situation calmed down by nightfall.

There were no official reports of injuries among the demonstrators.

Similar illegal gatherings, described by organizers as "coffee-drinking events", have turned into riots in the past.

The Netherlands is currently subject to a strict closure, which is expected to last until mid-January at least, due to the rapid spread of the highly contagious "Omicron" mutant.
