Liverpool loses to Leicester City due to a missed penalty by Mohamed Salah

 

Leicester, England (AFP) - Liverpool lost 1-0 to Leicester in a major blow to their Premier League 

title hopes after Mohamed Salah missed a first-half penalty on Tuesday.

 

Ademola Lookman's 59th minute goal saw 

Liverpool lose for the second time in the league

 and in all competitions this season

 and left the Reds six points behind leaders Manchester City after 19 games of the 38-round season.

 

City, who have won nine consecutive league games, 

play Brentford on Wednesday and the champions could 

be 12 points behind Liverpool by the time Jurgen Klopp's 

next side play at Chelsea on January 2.

 

 

A big turning point in the match came when Salah scored a penalty

 that was saved by Kasper Schmeichel in 

16th minute after Wilfried Ndidi missed it. 

The Egyptian striker converted his previous 15 penalties in the league.

 

Sadio Mane also missed a great opportunity 

in the 55th minute when he played clean in the net with a Diogo Jota pass,

 and four minutes later, substitute Lookman circled between 

Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk and fired a shot into the near post.

 

The only shot on target was from Leicester, 

which started with Ndidi's midfielder 

and full-back reserve midfielder/back in Daniel Amarty 

as an emergency centre-back partnership amid a defensive crunch.

 

Leicester also played two days earlier, 

in a 6-3 loss to Manchester City, while Liverpool 

were reviving after their match against Leeds

 - scheduled for the same day - was postponed.

 

"It's hard to put it into words," 

said Leicester coach Brendan Rodgers, 

who used to coach Liverpool. 

"Playing for Manchester City and Liverpool

 in 48 hours is a very heroic performance."

 

“We knew we would have to defend well sometimes

 but we knew we could play football too. 

An amazing result for us with everything 

we've been through against one of the best teams in the world.”

 

Klopp said many of his players were "below the norm".

 

"It was a very strange match," Klopp said. 

We weren't good enough.

 We still had enough chances. 

What we did with the balls wasn't right. 

We played a really bad game, 

so they (Leicester) deserved it."

 

Liverpool were left licking their wounds 

and wondering what they might have been like on Tuesday

 when they lost 1-0 in the Premier League against Leicester City.

 

Jurgen Klopp's men were outwitting Brenden Rodgers' stubborn foxes 

for long stretches of the game,

 but after a bunch of fouls,

 it always felt like the hosts never came out. Ultimately,

 a stunning performance and 

stunning finishing from Ademola Lookman defeated the Reds 

and gave Manchester City a major boost in the title race.

 

Positives

The frontal pressure was so cruel that

Lester had to pull every rabbit out of the hat just to stay alive. 

The gas tank on Liverpool's key players is there for all

 to see with their passing movements, in particular, 

which makes their opponents guess that the four defenders 

are particularly alert and shrewd most of the evening.

Negatives

There was a real inability inside Liverpool 

to stifle Leicester on the wings, and that was especially 

evident when he cut through the home side with one or two passes. 

Any balls over the top were a real problem and counter-attacks 

were constantly used against them as a way for Leicester

 to increase the pressure - which was especially true after the first half.

6 - The always lively Klopp could easily be criticized for not returning to Plan B 

when Leicester took the lead, but in fact, 

he picked a solid starting lineup given what he had at his disposal 

and they largely controlled the match. Of course, 

some of his replacements 

and their timing can be questioned,

and this is where he will likely face some heat.

Goalkeeper Alisson, 6 - Having nothing to do for most of the match,

 Alisson couldn't stop Lookman's shot from getting past him at the near post.
